![]() ![]() There are lots of references to other movies including Green Lantern (from the DC universe) where Ryan Reynolds says he doesn’t want his costume to be “green or animated”, making fun of the film as it was vastly disliked by critics. The film likes to parody itself, making fun of its genre and the stereotype that “girls” do not like watching super hero films because they are nerdy and silly. Much of the comedy relies upon adult humour with lines like “my boyfriend said this was a super hero movie but that guy turned that other guy into a fucking Shish kebab”, when DeadPool stabs a character and lifts him into the air. The film uses wordplay continuously, for example after 28:53 DeadPool says “well, I think we can agree that shit went sideways in the most colossal way” after he is sent flying by a character called Colossus. ![]() The fourth wall is broken throughout with the non-diegetic sound of DeadPool’s narration. This reference to the drawing neatly ties the film in with the comics upon which the film is based. The comedy is enhanced when DeadPool breaks through the fourth wall, talking to the audience in the second scene when he was drawing himself killing Ajax. GenreĬomedy: the film uses visual and verbal jokes and the director’s choice of actors, such as the well known comedian T.J. ![]() The great popularity of the film tells us that it had achieved its purpose to engage the audience and to make them laugh, helping them escape the normal world for a bit. Deadpool made revenues of $725.1m and was one of the highest watched films in 2016. The films other purpose is to make money for studio so they can make more films. Another purpose of the film is to make the audience laugh as essentially it is a comedy as it exaggerates the use of including references from other films like when Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is about to be put through torture he says he doesn’t want his costume “green or animated” this is referencing Ryan Reynolds last super hero movie of when he plays green lantern where his costume funnily enough is green and animated this is funny as it reminds people that he has been in other super hero films and that his new character dislikes it. Like all Marvel films since 2008, the film finishes with an extra end of credits scene that’s designed to ensure the audience are aware of the sequel following in early 2018 and to maintain interest in the franchise until its release. The references to Green Lantern work well because Ryan Reynolds stars in both movies, pointing out that this time he doesn’t want his costume to be “green or animated”. This begins immediately during the opening credits, where in a slow motion scene, they include piggybacking to great effect, mixing content from reality with a Hello Kitty lip balm piece and the Green Lantern movie. It does this through action, unique shots and humour. DeadPool’s primary goal is to make the audience laugh and get engaged. ![]()
